The Bridgerton star plays the key role in the movie adaptation – and he tells us one thing he could do with the character that isn't possible on stage.
The characters in Wicked have all been played by some legendary theatre performers during its long run on Broadway and the West End – most notably Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth's iconic turns as Elphaba and Glinda.
Fiyero – the role played by Bridgerton's Jonathan Bailey in the acclaimed new film adaptation – is no different, with Norbert Leo Butz having originated the character and a string of talented stars having brought him to life on stage since.
Bailey was very aware of this when taking on the role, but explained to RadioTimes.com that although he was very much informed by those who went before him, there was one way in which he felt he could put his own stamp on the character.
"Norbert Leo Butz– I'd never seen him perform, but there's obviously clips online, and I listened to many people's versions of Fiyero to... just because I loved the musical over time," he explained during an exclusive interview.
"But I think the one thing that I saw as an opportunity, especially when it's on film, is to... in the moments of quiet surrounding the script, you know, there's very lean but brilliant moments with Fiyero, and to expand and to really capture the sort of nuance of exactly what's happening as the mask falls and this idea of authenticity and being who you truly are."
He continued: "And obviously, we know that Fiyero has a complete transformative arc. So really, there was just an opportunity that, obviously, on stage, all the performances are amazing, but there is just... there are little moments that you can achieve in a close up, maybe.
"So that was what I was excited to explore."
Bailey and Jeff Goldblum – who has the vital role of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz in the movie – have struck up something of a bond on the press tour for the film, and the Jurassic Park star was full of praise for Bailey's interpretation of the character, remarking that it was "beautifully done".
"What a Fiyero!" he added. "And Norbert Leo Butz, you know, I saw him in this because I saw the original thing, and then I saw him in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and then I was doing Criminal Intent, we had an episode together. He's terrific. But you are the definitive Fiyero, one for the ages!
"And yes, I love that theme of what you say, of finding your true self, you know?," he added. "And it reminded me of that thing that is the credo of Popeye the Sailor. You know what he says, 'I am, what I am, and that's all what I am. I'm Popeye the Sailor Man', but in our case, 'I'm Fiyero!'"

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels Review (well just point that made me smile)
Absolutely loved Hadley and Ramin being carried off stage in a fireman’s carry. And both of them flipping the bird to each other as it occurs. Actually I just enjoyed every time Hadley flipped Ramin off which was like a good 3 times.
Honestly I think I half swooned every time Hadley sung (as is always the way). But the ‘More We Dance’ definitely made me swoon the most. Hadley honestly has so much charm as an actor that has not be highlighted in the shows he’s been in as of late. I also loved ‘Love Sneaks In’ absolute goosebumps.
Ramin’s stand out number for me was definitely ‘Great Big Stuff’. Honestly so energetic and fun. Dabbing and flossing included.
I will not be surprised if Ramin walks away with several bruises the amount of times he threw himself on the floor.
Comic timing was also absolutely impeccable throughout both from Hadley and Ramin. I felt like Hadley’s definitely leant more towards good ol’ British dry humour as well as some great accents. While Ramin shone with the slapstick stuff and the general brashness of his character.
It also made me smile so much to see Hadley play a genuinely good role in a musical again. One with a compelling narrative and good numbers. And it was great seeing him have so much fun with the role.
It also made me genuinely so happy to have Hadley call him self perfect all the time and comment on how attractive he is (in character of course) because honestly yeah he is!
And finally it was just so fantastic seeing Ramin and Hadley act opposite each other. I haven’t ever seen that irl and god it was amazing. They have so much chemistry with one another that every line they spoke felt so natural and you could just see the mutual enjoyment in every scene. And there is nothing I enjoy more than seeing an actor break character from laughing. Because Ramin definitely could not stop laughing while Hadley was ‘torturing’ him. I think they have such a special form of chemistry, such a good bond that I want to see them act in a 100 shows together and I definitely have a couple of ideas as to what.
#oh and it was hilarious when Freddie (Ramin) kept calling Lawrence (Hadley) old because Ramin is older than Hadley#it was just so good#Hadley Fraser#ramin karimloo#dirty rotten scoundrels

⚠️ DON’T START DISCOURSE ABOUT RPF IN THE NOTES!! YOU WILL BE BLOCKED IF YOU DO SO ⚠️
Do you ship it?
Reason:
“Yknow when you mentioned musical theatre stars that work a lot in west end they actually Did cross my mind... that one moment in Les Miz 25th anniversary where Hadley caresses Ramin's cheek during Drink With Me lives rent free in my brain...”
Mod reason: these two istg (/pos). They met in 2002 when Ramin was Hadley’s understudy, and they’ve been best friends ever since. They played the most iconic ship from Les Mis, made it gayer than it already was, then played what’s probably the second most iconic ship from the same show, and probably also made it very gay (it was already gay). In between these two they starred opposite of each other in a concert version of Phantom of the Opera, and (shockingly enough) it was lowkey pretty gay especially near the end. Then they made a band together, started two different series of concerts with each other, and in November they’re gonna be starring in a concert version of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. OH YEAH AND RAMIN NAMED HIS SECOND SON AFTER HADLEY. #ramley4life

WIP Wednesday!!
Taking a break today from posting music prompt one-shots to bring you an upcoming snippet from Chapter 10 - Zelda's Adventure Sours
Excerpt:
“There’s still treasure to be had!” Gustaf claims, leaning forward on the stool, his voice edged with desperation. “The Master Sword does exist, it is invaluable, and only the wielder of the Triforce of Courage may claim it. All we need to do is sail back to the Temple of Time.”
As far as Link is concerned, this conversation is over. He glances over his shoulder and catches Groose’s eye. “Shove his scurvy ass in the hold until I figure out what I’m gonna do with him.”
Let the old man stew, wondering what Link will do or say next. Pulling the map on his desk to him, he traces the most direct route to Seven Star Isle. They could make it there in a few days time. That should put a good distance between them, Central Hyrule and anyone on their tail.
Groose stomps past and takes Gustaf’s firmly by the upper arm. “Come on, old man.”
Gustaf’s strains against Groose’s steely grip. His pale blue eyes wide and pleading as he struggles to free himself. “Please! You must believe me! It’s in the temple on the hill above the graveyard on the Sacred Forest Island. You can unlock the crypt where the sword slumbers with the goddess pearls! I know you heard the sword’s call! I saw how you acted when we were there!”
A shudder runs down Link’s spine at the mention of the Sacred Forest, and the eerie song starts playing over and over again like a dog chasing its tail. Until Link feels like he’s the one who’s been running in circles and his head spins. Squeezing his eyes shut, he resists the urge to cover his ears and wills the melody to stop plaguing him.
No. He isn't going back to that island, let alone inside the temple where the ghostly woman lives, begging and pleading to be set free. It’s not going to happen. Scanning the map, he taps the big black ‘X’ on the island. They’ll have to drag Link by his hair kicking and screaming.
Chapters One - Nine are available to read HERE
Summary:
Down on his luck pirate, Link thinks his ship has come in when the fallen King Gustaf Harkinian implores him and his crew to rescue his daughter, Zelda, before she's forced to wed the usurper of the crown, Ganondorf Dragmire.
Link isn’t as interested in a princess, all prim, proper, and boring as he is in obtaining treasure beyond his wildest dreams. However his tune quickly changes when he sees her. Too bad she thinks he’s a dirty rotten scoundrel.

I really wanna ask if there are any musicals that heavily inspired you. I can absolutely hear it in many of the songs and just wanted to see if there was anything specific that caught your interest. Thanks!!
Oh I’m a theater kid through and through!
Some of my favorites include Jesus Christ Superstar, Avenue Q, Bat Boy, Rocky Horror, Book Of Mormon, Company, Little Shop of Horrors, and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels - plus some movie musicals like Hercules and Muppet Treasure Island. I don’t think I’d be a songwriter if it wasn’t for my love of films and shows like those!
That said I don’t take specific inspiration from songs (i.e. “let’s make a song just like Suddenly Seymour”), and like all professional songwriters I take pains to actively avoid reusing any specific melody from another piece of work - in fact, other than Alastor’s Game, which I co-wrote, and Addict, which I had heard before getting the gig, I actually specifically avoided all Hazbin fan music to ensure nothing on the soundtrack would feel subconsciously derivative of a piece of fan work.
But being a musicals fan is super helpful when it comes to creating a shorthand for the function and structure of a song! If I say “a One Day More type song” everyone understands that this is a shorthand for “an act break ensemble song with several POVs”, if I say “a Good Morning Baltimore type song”, everyone understands that this is a shorthand for “an opening number that introduces our time, place, and protagonist”, if I say “a Being Alive type song”, everyone understands that this is a shorthand for “a character emotional epiphany ballad.” It’s like speaking a language all its own!
